This FOA encourages applications at the intersection of HIV and aging by addressing two overarching objectives: 1) to improve understanding of biological, clinical, and socio-behavioral aspects of aging through the lens of HIV infection and its treatment; and 2) to improve approaches for testing, prevention, and treatment of HIV infection, and management of HIV-related comorbidities, co-infections, and complications in different populations and cultural settings by applying our current understanding of aging science.

It is presented by Dr. Matthew Boulton who is an active researcher and leading national expert on the public health workforce. Dr. Boulton teaches Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The CDC Releases 40th Annual Report on the Health of the Nation

The report features a Chartbook on Long-Term Trends in health and health care delivery over the past 40 years. From declines in cigarette smoking and increases in prescription drug use to changes in expenditures for hospitals and home health care, the annual report also explores population changes that have affected patterns of disease, as well as health care access and utilization since 1975.  The 27 charts and 114 tables present birth rates and infant mortality, life expectancy and leading causes of death, health risk behaviors, health care utilization and insurance coverage, and health expenditures.

Empowered Communities for a Healthier Nation Initiative

The Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the United States Department of Health and Human Services announces the availability of Fiscal Year 2017 cooperative agreement funds for the Empowered Communities for a Healthier Nation Initiative. The Empowered Communities for a Healthier Nation Initiative seeks to reduce significant health disparities impacting racial and ethnic minorities and/or disadvantaged populations through implementing evidence-based strategies with the greatest potential for impact.

The program is intended to serve residents in communities disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic; childhood/adolescent obesity; and serious mental illness.

Do you know what we’re doing about colorectal cancer disparities? Dr. Sanya A. Springfield and Dr. María Elena Martínez recently coauthored a blog post on HuffPost about how we are addressing colorectal cancer disparities through the Screen to Save initiative.

The new resource will provide the cancer research community with preclinical models that may more faithfully represent a patient’s tumor than traditional xenograft models. NCI is initially releasing 100 models across seven histologies.  As new models pass the quality control process, they will be added to the publicly available database. ePAD is a freely available quantitative imaging informatics platform, developed by the Rubin Lab at Stanford Medicine Radiology at Stanford University. Thanks to its plug-in architecture, ePAD can be used to support a wide range of imaging-based projects.

A large quantity of published data is available only in the form of plots and it is often difficult to extract numerical data accurately out of these pictures. There are several softwares available to aid this process, but most are either paid, difficult to use or lack some essential features. Also, many of the existing programs work only on a few specific operating systems and require installation by the user. Most programs only support 2D X-Y plots and so it is not possible to work with polar diagrams, ternary diagrams, microscope images or maps. With these issues in mind, WebPlotDigitizer was developed to be an easy to use, free of charge and opensource program that can work with a variety of plot types and images. This program is developed using HTML5 which allows it to run within a web browser and requires no installation on to the user's hard drive.

Image registration is the process of transforming images into a common coordinate system so corresponding pixels represent homologous biological points. SimpleElastix is an extension of SimpleITK that offers a user-friendly API to the popular image registration algorithms of the elastix C++ library. This makes state-of-the-art medical image registration really easy to do in languages like Python, Java, C# and R.
