Cancer Biomarker Data Commons Think-Tank Meeting

On February 8-9th, 2018, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) conveened a think-tank meeting to discuss potential informatics solutions such as a Cancer Biomarker Data Commons, which would function as a set of interoperable biomarker data-aggregators in the overarching Cancer Data Ecosystem. Participants discussed the potential scope, needs, and approaches to the development a CBDC as a question-based data-aggregator(s) in the overarching Cancer Data Ecosystem. Additionally, participants reviewed challenges associated with the discovery and development of biomarkers for the risk assessment and early detection. Several existing high-value datasets were identified as potential candidates for pilot projects focused on the development of fit-for-purpose (FIT) data collections co-localized with analytical tools and computing platforms. Such projects would test collaborative approaches to enhanced data sharing, facilitating the adoption of best practices and standards, improving reproducibility, enabling accurate appraisal of health disparities. The event was organized jointly by the NCI Cancer Biomarker Research Group (CBRG/DCP), the NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT), the NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
