  • Biography

I received my German diploma in computer science (equivalent to a master's degree in computer science) from extramural studies at the FernUniversität Hagen and my PhD in computer science from the University of Tübingen, Germany. Prior to the position at Notre Dame, I was a research associate in the Data-Intensive Research Group at the University of Edinburgh, UK, in the area of data-intensive workflows and in the Applied Bioinformatics Group at the University of Tübingen, Germany, in the area of science gateways and grid computing. Additionally, I have perennial experience as a project manager and system developer in industry. As head of a system programmer group, I have led long-term software projects (e.g. infrastructure on web-based applications).

My research interests include science gateways, especially for bioinformatic applications and distributed as well as parallel programming. In this context, I also work on disease modeling and analysis frameworks for modeling and simulations. I founded the European workshop series IWSG (International Workshop on Science Gateways) in 2009, which partners with the US and the Australian workshop series on science gateways. I'm an editor of the open-access journal PeerJ Computer Science, the editor of over 10 special issues or conference/workshop proceedings and the author of over 60 scientific publications.
