MD/PhD Training Program Overview

The goal of the joint UPR/MDACC MD/PhD Program is to train a cadre of outstanding physician-scientists in patient-based and translational oncology research. The joint program of biomedical research and medical training prepares trainees to:

  • acquire the skills and training needed for cutting-edge, discovery research,
  • recognize the clinical implications of new basic discoveries,
  • identify basic science information needed to improve patient care and health,
  • develop collaborative projects with senior faculty for long-term mentoring, and
  • translate lab-based research findings into successful manuscript and grant submissions.

We are confident that graduates from this program will aid in forming a nucleus of competitive, Hispanic physician-scientists qualified for junior faculty positions at the UPR Comprehensive Cancer Center (UPRCCC), MDACC, and the UPR System, as well as other institutions.
