MD, PhD, and MD/PhD Interviews - Why Cancer?

This series contains interviews from faculty at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and The University of Puerto Rico System, as well as other participating institutions. This presentation is supported by the National Cancer Institute through a supplement (3U54CA096300-12S1) to the UPR/MDACC Partnership for Excellence in Cancer Research Training Program. PDX Portal: A compendium of Patient Derived Xenograft (PDX) models

Patient Derived Xenograft (PDX) models for cancer research are created by the implantation of human cells and tumor tissue into immune compromised mouse hosts. PDX models provide a platform for in vivo cancer biology studies and pre-clinical cancer drug efficacy testing. The current state of the art mouse host is the "NOD-SCID-Gamma2" (NSG) mouse. NSG mice lack mature T and B cells, have no functional natural killer cells, and are deficient in both innate immunity and cytokine signaling.

The PDX Portal allows users to search for Patient Derived Xenograft models created at The Jackson Laboratory.

Mouse Models of Human Cancer: The Mouse Tumor Biology Database

The Mouse Tumor Biology (MTB; http://tumor.informatics.jax.org) database is a unique online compendium of mouse models for human cancer.

MTB provides online access to expertly curated information on diverse mouse models for human cancer and interfaces for searching and visualizing data associated with these models.

Use MTB to find:

  • characteristic cancer incidence for inbred strains of mice
  • genetically modified mice used to model human cancer
  • mouse models for genes commonly mutated in human cancers

KOMP2 and IMPC knockout mice for the oncology research community

The International Mouse Phenotyping consortium funded in large part by the The KOMP2 Common Fund is producing and characterizing a knockout out mouse strain for every protein coding gene. Each strain is tested by a high-throughput phenotyping pipeline to assess physiological characteristics across a wide range of biological systems. By assessing the phenotypes that results when a gene is switched off, we hope to gain new insights into gene function. Here we will gather posts about knockout mouse strains that might be of interest to the oncology community.
